BioThis is a journal for the ongoing recovery of longtime F&SF fan Elliot Shorter -- known in the modern middle ages as Master El of the Two Knives -- who landed in the hospital in April 2008 with an injury to his right foot ... and somehow ended up needing to lose the left. The surgery was followed by weeks of scary medical conditions, and equally scary interventions. But now that he no longer has more wires than his hi-fi, he's looking forward to living on his own ... one of these days.
Asked how he's doing, he replies: "I'm alive!"
Music-playing devices have been provided by friends, along with a couple of bags of booksto be read when he has more energy for such things now mostly read! He also has a netbook, and in-house Wi-Fi, which he's learning to use. And he has a new e-mail address -- el2knives@yahoo.com -- so new, he doesn't yet know it exists, but we'll fix that soon.
Cards, letters and visitors - SCAdian, SF or mundane - continue to be much in demand. But! Although El adores chocolate, he says he doesn't need any right now. Likewise, although pointy things can be great fun, please don't bring or send any (either as gifts or just tucked into a pocket) until he's back on his own, as most large institutions are not so understanding as they used to be.

The room is private; the phone is a portable that can be carried to his bedside. We'll see how it goes. For now, he is still hoping to return to Oak Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (OakHillRehab.com) in Pawtucket, which was his first home after the hospital.
